Luxembourg shares borders with the industrial regions of Germany, France, and Belgium, and has the highest per capita income in the EU. The northern Ösling region is part of the plateau of the Ardennes, and is undulating and forested. Luxembourg's prosperity was once based on steel; before World War II it produced more per capita than the US. Today, it is known as the headquarters of key EU institutions and as a banking center.
