Landlocked Burundi lies just south of the equator on the Nile–Congo watershed. Lake Tanganyika forms part of its border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Tension between the Hutu majority and the dominant Tutsi minority remains the main factor in politics. The assassination of the first Hutu president in a coup by the Tutsi-dominated army in October 1993 sparked terrible violence and led to a decade of political unrest.
