Steve LevineINTERVIEW WITH STEVE LEVINE

Award-winning producer Steve Levine is the mastermind behind the brilliant Hit Kit. He's worked with Culture Club, The Beach Boys, Mis-teeq and many, many more artists. We caught up with him to find out his thoughts and advice!

What were your musical influences when you were younger?
I was greatly influenced by very early reggae and soul. But I wasn't just into the music, I wanted to know who had produced the records and always looked on the sleeves to check. The producers who have influenced me most were Norman Whitfield, Thom Bell, Qunicy Jones and Arif Mardin.

If you had two pieces of advice for anyone wanting to get into the music industry what would they be?

Firstly I would say never take no for an answer, especially if the reason for the rejection is because you are doing something too different. History has shown that the more maverick material is the most successful. My second piece of advice would be never sign anything until a lawyer has checked it through. If you can't get to a lawyer then join the Musician's Union who will give you all the advice you need.

Do you have any insider tips for using The Hit Kit?
Make sure that all your equipment is set up properly before you start anything. Problems are very often caused by equipment being set up incorrectly so make sure you read all your manuals from start to finish!

Which do you prefer - Fame Academy or Pop Idol?
I hate them both! The programmes are well intentioned and very entertaining but they don't address the real talent out there. These TV formats only appeal to a certain group of people and don’t attract the real artists.

Out of all the records you have produced which is your favourite?
The record you are working on currently always seems like the best because you are really into it. At the moment I am producing Little Menace - a young, creative and very inspirational group and we're pushing the boundaries! My favourite album though must be Colour by Number by Culture Club. This album sold about 10 million copies around the world and that is something I am very proud of.
