John Gribbin is a highly acclaimed author, broadcaster, journalist, and research scientist. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and has written over 50 books. He is also the Series Editor of Dorling Kindersley's Essential Science books. Here, he tells us more about the new series.

You are an internationally renowned author, widely acclaimed for your ability to explain scientific subjects to a popular audience. Why do you think the Essential Science series will be so effective in communicating scientific issues to a wide audience?

I've always been excited by the idea of using pictures and text together to get sometimes complex scientific ideas across, and the Dorling Kindersley "style" lends itself very well to this. I'd really like to revise every book I've ever written into this kind of illustrated volume. The other special thing we have tried to do in ES is to deliver those ideas in bite-sized pieces - as a series of little books, from which the reader can choose what they require to develop their understanding of topics of particular interest.

This year is Science Year, which particularly focuses on raising the scientific understanding of those aged 10-19. Do you feel that young people today need to raise their scientific awareness?

I'm not a big fan of special "years" or "weeks" or whatever. But although it is a cliche, it is still true that we live in a world where science and technology dominate our lives, and everyone needs to be aware of what is going on. The main problem is usually the way science is taught, not a lack of interest, and I hope this series will turn out to be user friendly. I even dream that a few MPs might read it and learn something!

Among the new books are titles on Food for the Future and Global Warming - subjects we read a lot about in the media. They are always covered as 'worrying' topics. Will these books hopefully help to put the public's mind at rest to a certain extent.

We are not trying either to alarm people or put their minds at rest, but to inform them (hopefully with a bit of entertainment thrown in) so they can make their own decisions about things that affect all our lives - one reason why I hope politicians might read them.
