'Not just a thoroughly insightful armchair guide to a fascinating country but also an essential reference book to accompany you on your travels.
All the information about customs and traditions is true to life, the advice on how to get around invaluable, the descriptions of the places never a let down and the photographs tempt you explore deeper.
I have an expanding collection of DK guides and find them truthful, unfanciful and an asset to have on holiday. You know you will be seeing the best a country/place has to offer with these books.
The food and shopping suggestions were spot on, up-to-date. The summation of Japan’s history, brief enough to give a flavour of how the country came to be.
The city map of Tokyo has just the right amount of detail. I have a passion for traditional arts and crafts and the book helped to narrow down my search to some of the best places.
If you’re in Kyoto try Terramachi Street for traditional Japanese type gifts, many of the big department stores in the main cities are very much focused on western style fashions and goods. However if you want to see some amazing food head to the basement areas (generally) in the likes of Diamaru, Mitsukoshi, Matsuzakaya, Hankyu, Isetan… I’m afraid Marks & Spencer and some of London’s posh shops are knocked into a cocked hat with the beauty of some of Japan’s finer culinary delights.
I spent two weeks exploring the island of Honshu, the book covers other islands as well and so will be at my side as I search the internet to uncover more of Japan’s cultural, historical and social jewels when I return to it, which I will.
DK keep up the good work, a brilliant series of travel guides. I never go on holiday without one.
