Review by: Peter Gilbert , 17 August 2004
I have just read this 244 page illustrated hard-back guide released in June 2004, written by two well-known diabetes specialist nurses, Rosemary Walker and Jill Rodgers, and published by Dorling Kindersley in association with Diabetes UK.
This is the best patient manual I have read on diabetes and outstanding value for the wealth of useful information contained in it.
It explains why things happen and provides statistics so that we can make informed judgements. In addition to the usual topics,
It covers preparing for pregnancy and childbirth with diabetes and diabetic children/adolescents and deals with things less often mentioned like depression (with statistics) and erectile dysfunction. It is enriched by patient quotes "my experience:" and by myth or truth and practical tips boxes.
In my view every diabetes clinic and Primary Care Trust diabetes specialist nurse in the country should have a copy and should be recommending it to their patients who they think can cope with it. It does take a while to read and digest.
