Introduction

“It is time to cut out what we do not need so we can live more simply and happily.” John Seymour

Now revised and fully updated, this expanded edition of an enduring classic is still the key reference to living off the land. Packed with practical information, tried-and-tested tips and invaluable nuggets of advice, Seymour’s visionary handbook explains how to reap the harvest, respect the land, stay healthy and waste nothing.

Now with 150 new artworks and with the classic illustrations redrawn in full colour, this edition features new material on ethical living, creating an urban garden, generating power from wind, water and the sun, and guide lines on making the break and changing your life. There is also information on everything from clearing land, planting and harvesting to feeding, clothing and sheltering yourself.

  • Easy-to-follow sections on crafts and skills.
  • A comprehensive guide to gathering food from the garden, from livestock or from the wild.
  • Advice on self-sufficiency in the kitchen, including recipes.
  • A new resources section including useful websites and addresses.

Review by: Frank Thompson, 21 February 2006

A fine book, which is a must for all who wish to add some self-reliance to their lives. An up-date on his previous book is so timely as web sites and new regulations have been included. The basic philosophy of "doing" rather than expecting everything to be done for oneself still comes over loud and clear.
