Hugh McManners

Hugh McManners was born in Oxford. He was brought up partly in England and partly in Australia. He served in the British Army for 16 years, leaving in 1989 as a major. He now lives in North Downs, near Canterbury.

After reading Geography at Oxford University, and passing both Commando and Parachute Regiments' selection courses, he served in a great many parts of the world with the Commando Forces. Whilst in Belize he ran the British Army's jungle warfare training school, but he has also worked as an Army Diving Supervisor, a Combat Survival Instructor, and naval gunfire, artillery and fighter-ground attack controller.

His combat experience includes working with the SBS and SAS on long-range deep penetration patrols behind enemy lines during the Falklands War. He served in the UN in Cyprus during the Turkish invasion and occupation of 1974, and commanded a company in Northern Ireland.

Since then Hugh has contributed to a wide range of publications, including Geographical Magazine, The Times, The Observer and The Daily Telegraph, for which he is the defence correspondent. He is also the editor of Command magazine. Hugh has written many books, including The Commando Survival Guide, The Backpackers Handbook, The Outdoor Adventure Handbook, Biking: An Outdoor Adventure Handbook and Water sports: An Outdoor Adventure Handbook, all for Dorling Kindersley.

Hugh has been involved with many television programmes including Channel 4's Dispatches, the BBC 2 series Battlecries, ITV's Commando series and Channel 4's Cutting Edge. He is currently working as a presenter for the Discovery channel. Hugh has also appeared on children's shows including Gimme 5 were he arranged an outdoor survival day with a group of children.

Hugh's wide-ranging broadcasting experience and his diverse personal interests (he's also a singer in a rock group!) means that he's ready for anything!
