The British Red Cross cares for people in crisis. It is governed by its seven fundamental principles - humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality - through which it provides care to those who are vulnerable both at home and abroad.
The British Red Cross responds in times of crisis, providing services for:
- Those who are returning home after a stay in hospital
- Those who need transport and escort assistance to a place of safety or medical facilities
- Those who need therapeutic care or cosmetic camouflage
- Those who are victims of a house fire
- Those who need short-term medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, or supplies, such as baby food or blankets
- Those who need emergency response assistance such as first aid, or practical and emotional support at times of a major incident
- Those who need shelter whilst injured themselves or waiting for news of relatives
Volunteers
Volunteers are the lifeblood of the British Red Cross. All the good work is only made possible because every year, tens of thousands of volunteers willingly give up their time to help others.
Volunteers with the British Red Cross are involved in providing a diverse range of services throughout the UK. These include first aid, fundraising, shop volunteering, refugee services, care in the home and the international tracing and message service. For example, the first aid volunteers provide first-aid cover at a wide range of public events - everything from local fetes to major sporting and music events.
And for every front-line volunteer providing help, there is another volunteer co-ordinating and supporting services behind the scenes, making sure the Red Cross machine keeps operating.
